LIS (formerly, the Luxembourg Income Study) is seeking to fill a new position, titled LIS “Executive Director”. A job advertisement and a supplementary “ further particulars ” document are posted on the LIS website. I am writing to ask you to circulate this notice among your networks and / or to forward it to potential candidates. We have asked that applications be submitted by March 15, 2015, but the search will remain open until the position is filled. Let me offer some background, briefly: Since I became LIS Director, nearly 10 years ago, the scale of my position has increased enormously. That is largely because LIS now has two active, growing offices: the main office in Luxembourg, and the United States’ LIS office (officially named the “LIS Center”) which is based at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. The LIS Director post is now simply too large for one person to carry out effectively. Last year, I asked the LIS Executive Committee to add a second Director to the LIS masthead, one who would have extensive leadership, managerial, administrative, and fundraising responsibility. With the Executive Committee’s guidance, this new position was established. At my request, the new person — once hired — will direct the Luxembourg office and will take the top position. I will stay on as Director of the United States’ LIS office. In my future role, I will continue to oversee LIS’ staffing, operations, and public programming on the American side of the Atlantic. I will also continue to take responsibility for U.S.-based fundraising and for the teaching components that I have developed at the Graduate Center. (LIS’ Director of Operations, based in Luxembourg, will also stay, taking an expanded role). A 10-person search committee, chaired by Professor Stephen Jenkins at LSE, will oversee the hiring of the new Executive Director. The new person, we hope, will have one transition year (starting in September 2015) and will assume the Executive Directorship in September 2016. The LIS Executive Committee and I expect that the new Executive Director and I will work in close collaboration for years to come. Janet C. Gorick, Director, LIS (Luxembourg), Director, LIS Center (New York), Professor of Political Science and Sociology, Graduate Center, City University of New York.

BIGSSS International Conference 2015: From POVERTY to PARTIES and INSTITUTIONS to INEQUALITY: Linking Structural Inequalities & Social Policy Making, Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), University of Bremen. Thursday and Friday, September 24th & 25th, 2015. Call for Papers: This conference aims to identify linkages between social stratification and mobility and social policy and welfare states. It focuses on issues that lie at the intersection of inequality and policy. For example: Does social policy enable or inhibit social mobility? Do welfare states change in response to increasing social inequality? How are actors and institutions causing or responding to inequality? It brings together the stratification focus of the ECSR and the policy focus of ESPAnet into a common framework in order to broaden our theoretical horizons and illuminate the social inequality and political process nexus. For paper submissions we seek abstracts of no more than 300 words. The conference is open to all academics, and we hope for a good mix of PhD students, postdocs, lecturers and professors. The conference welcomes those from any discipline germane to stratification and social policy; ie political science, sociology, economics, demography, and social psychology. It welcomes research on any geographic states or regions. Please see the website link below for specific session themes and details on submission of abstracts. Keynote Speakers: Prof. Jane Gingrich (University of Oxford), Prof. Mads Meier Jæger (University of Copenhagen), Prof. Susanne K. Schmidt (BIGSSS / University of Bremen). Research Master in Sociology and Demography de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, The Research MA in Sociology and Demography of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) offers a good postgraduate training in the causes and dimensions of inequality in post-industrial societies, as well as in the demographic processes (fertility, nuptiality, migration...) that are related to them. Besides, our program offers advanced training in quantitative research techniques that will enable the student to carry out applied or academic research. In addition, our MA program offers the possibility of enrolling in one of three double degrees that we have with the universities of Tillburg, Groningen and Trento. A double degree facilitates the attainment of two MA degrees with some economies of scale, that often come from developing a comon master thesis. The three double degrees that are now offered have been established with the universities of Tillburg Groningen and Trento. Finally, there's some financial help that we can offer to the students who are interested in us. These bursaries or scholarships do not cover the full cost of the program or your stay here, but they surely help. Call for papers: Quetelet Seminar 2015 – Local Demography. Relations between population, place of residence and public policy. November 18-20, 2015, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. The 2015 Quetelet Seminar – co-organized by the Centre for Demographic Research (DEMO) of the Université catholique de Louvain and the Institut wallon de l’évaluation, de la prospective et de la statistique (IWEPS) of the Walloon Region – will be held in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) 18–20 November 2015. It will focus on local demographics and on the interactions between place of residence, local policies and demographic characteristics or behaviour, in both developed and developing countries. The overall objective of this Quetelet Seminar is to highlight the relationship between demographics and place of residence. This may extend to methodological questions and political dimensions. Place or area of residence will refer to a narrow spatial division, such as neighbourhood, municipality or township. The Seminar will explore, by means of comparative methods, the diversity of demographic landscapes at a local scale. It will analyze the factors behind these differences and examine how demographic parameters may structure national and regional territories. It will also examine to what extent place of residence and its socio-economic, cultural and environmental characteristics may influence certain demographic parameters. It will also consider the interactions between local policies and specific demographic situations, characteristics or behavior. Finally, it will focus on methodological problems inherent to small populations. These include small numbers, the availability and quality of the data, and the use of demographic surveillance sites to create local databases and follow up on populations. Submissions, which may concern the demographic past, present or future, will refer to any of the following topics: Methods and techniques for observing local populations. Examining the use of direct and indirect data sources for the study of local populations and outlining their benefits and limitations. Papers shall cover analytical methods specific to small populations (spatial analyses, creation of typologies, effects of small numbers...) or projections of local populations. What are the available observational tools (interactive databases, synthetic populations...) and for what purposes are they used? What about demographic surveillance systems? The diversity of demographic structures and behaviour, at a local and regional scale: from description to explanation. Highlighting spatial differences and inequalities in terms of demographic characteristics and behaviour (higher or lower mortality areas, increased or reduced ageing...) and revealing the mechanisms that generate them. What factors explain population dynamics at a local scale? What is the role of internal and international migration and the selectivity of migration patterns? What are the implications of local demographic diversity for public policy (health, assistance to the disadvantaged or the elderly, housing...)? Identifying demographic continuities and changes and specifying the relationship between demographic spatial disparities and social inequalities. To what extent do characteristics (economic, social, cultural, environmental...) of place of residence determine demographic behaviour? Do housing characteristics, in a given place, influence fertility patterns? How does the social and ecological environment of place of residence affect health and mortality? What are the effects of local or regional policies, in terms of welfare, land use and housing, on demographic characteristics and behaviour? Call for papers deadline, organisation : http://www.uclouvain.be/en-511026.html. Deadline for submission of proposals : 15 June 2015. Organisation: Centre for Demographic Research, Catholic University of Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. (http://www.uclouvain.be/demo) and IWEPS (http://www.iweps.be/). To submit a proposal : [email protected]. "Living Alone: One-person households in Asia", edited by W.J. Jean Yeung and Adam K.L Cheung, Demographic Research, V32. http://demographic-research.org/special/15/default.htm. Special Collection 15, Living Alone: One-person households in Asia. Published 03 June 2015. This special collection, edited by Wei-Jun Jen Yeung and Adam Ka-Lok Cheung, adds new knowledge about the fastest growing type of household in Asia – one-person households (OPH). The 11 papers in the collection examine OPH in 15 countries in East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea), Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines) and South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan). The collected papers analyze the historical trends, the policy implications and impact on individual well-being of OPH. They were first presented at a conference convened by the guest editors at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore in December 2013. This collection is the first body of literature that systematically investigates one-person households outside of Western societies. The papers use data from censuses and large-scale household surveys, many with longitudinal or comparative analyses. Together, they provide an excellent basis for international comparison and future investigation. They illustrate both similarities to and differences from Western societies. The papers also reveal significant inter- and intra-national heterogeneities among those living alone in Asia. OPH will continue to increase in Asia in the next few decades due to rapid aging, declining marriage and fertility, and increasing divorce and migration. More theoretical and empirical research is needed to understand the complexity of this living arrangement and its impact.
Journal of Family Issues 35(12) 2014. Special Issue: Marriage in Asia. Guest editors: Wei-Jun Jean Yeung and Gavin Jones. http://jfi.sagepub.com/content/35/12.toc. This special issue gives readers a taste of the diversity of Asia, by including articles on countries from Turkey in the west to the Philippines in the east, two of Asia’s three largest countries—China and Indonesia—and a country in South Asia—Sri Lanka. The articles examine the trends in marriage and explore the possible factors contributing to these trends in different national circumstances. We explore why, although similar forces continue to shape changes in Asian societies, including the institution of marriage, sharp differences in marriage patterns and systems persist throughout the region. Finally, we note limitations in extant literature and speculate about future marriage trends in Asia.

Residential Inequality in American Neighborhoods and Communities. Volume 660, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, July 2015. This volume, edited by Barrett Lee, Glenn Firebaugh, John Iceland, and Stephen Matthews, consists of 17 papers first presented at the Penn State Stratification Conference last fall. Motivating the volume is the dogged persistence of residential inequality in the United States. Although many people pursue the American Dream, seeking desirable homes and neighborhoods, their progress has been slowed by rising income disparities, natural disasters, the Great Recession, mortgage foreclosures, and dramatic swings in housing prices. Whether immigrants and their children are able to achieve their residential goals is another current concern. At the same time, longstanding spatial divides along race and class lines have been sustained through discriminatory practices and individuals’ preferences to live near those similar to themselves. The contributors to the volume, who include leading scholars from multiple disciplines, explore how stratification intersects with the residential landscape. Their research highlights linkages between socioeconomic and ethnoracial statuses and four spatial sorting processes: segregation, housing and locational attainment, residential mobility, and neighborhood change. State-of-the-art substantive work is featured, with many of the papers employing innovative methods or data to speak to issues of both theoretical and policy importance. More information about the volume can be found at http://ann.sagepub.com/.

Petition to form an analytical sociology section within ASA. Dear Colleague, Over the last couple of years, there have been discussions about the possibility of forming an analytical sociology section within the ASA. Growing representation not only in leading sociology journals but also in journals like the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and Science have convinced us that now is the time to launch this section. The recent successes of the International Network of Analytical Sociologists annual conferences, along with a newly initiated book series in analytical sociology by Princeton University Press, lead us to believe that analytical sociology will quickly establish itself as a vibrant and attractive section of the ASA. We expect that this section will be of interest to many of the existing ASA members. There is an important niche to be filled for a section that caters to scholars in different substantive fields who do serious theory and research focusing on social networks, social mechanisms, collective dynamics, micro-macro links, and related approaches. This includes many junior scholars pursuing research in mathematical sociology, methods, and computational social science for whom analytic sociology would be an attractive home. The first stage in the process of forming a new section within the ASA is to get a minimum of 200 ASA members to support the initiative. We very much hope that you will be one of them. Please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8YR2ZZC in order to register your support. To have the section in place for the 2016 ASA meeting in Seattle, and to be able to put together a highly stimulating set of sessions that reflect the breath and quality of analytical sociology, we kindly ask for your support by Monday, August 24th. With the best wishes, Delia Baldassarri Peter Bearman Elizabeth Bruch Damon Centola Karen Cook Filiz Garip Mark Granovetter Peter Hedström Michael Macy Robert Mare Christopher Winship.

Call for Papers Housing Wealth and Welfare. Conference: HOUSING WEALTH AND WELFARE, Hosted by the Centre for Urban Studies, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, May 25th & 26th 2016. Along with the proliferation of homeownership as well as volatile property price increases in recent decades, housing wealth has been increasingly eyed as a resource that can be drawn upon to support a variety of consumption and welfare needs. Becoming an owner-occupier has thus been recognized by households, governments and markets alike as a means to accumulate personal wealth that functions as private insurance against life-course risks such as unemployment, divorce and old age, as well as a way to pool shelter and share the benefits of asset accumulation with children. Changes in housing wealth have, however, also been associated with broader trends in inequality, within and between generations. Both the increasing importance of and growing inequalities in, housing wealth have begun to reshape policy approaches to housing and welfare, as well as the political economy of welfare states. This conference aims to bring together the latest theories and empirical findings in the dynamic research field surrounding housing wealth and welfare, taking into account the different meanings of ‘welfare’ – from welfare provision to well-being as well as situations indicating a ‘lack of welfare’, such as poverty and inequality. It does so with a cross-disciplinary focus that seeks to better unify sociological, economic, political, geographical and anthropological understandings of housing goods. The increased centrality of housing equity as both an investment and as collateral that may potentially finance other needs necessitates a fundamental change in the way we approach the relationship between housing and welfare, as well as the provision of both by states, markets and families. At the same time, the politics, culture and social economy of housing vary widely across advanced welfare states, demanding sensitivity to local contexts and their interaction with more global forces. A particular focus of the event will be the consideration of the findings of two recent European Research Council funded projects addressing housing wealth, welfare and inequality issues in cross-national contexts (HOUWEL and HOWCOME). We invite the submission of abstracts (deadline, late-January 2016) for papers to be presented in workshop sessions that will take place over the two days. There will also be a number of keynote and plenary sessions given by leading researchers, practitioners and thinkers in this field. The conference will conclude with a round table session that will contemplate the overall outcomes of two-days of presentation and discussion, and their implications for policy and the future of housing markets, assets, welfare and inequality. The Venue: The event is organized in association with ERC Starting Grants HOUWEL (www.houwel.uva.nl) and HOWCOME (www.tilburguniversity.edu\howcome), and hosted by the Centre for Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam. The main location of the conference will be at the University Library (on the Singel) in the historic city centre of Amsterdam. The Themes: We invite the submission of abstracts and papers addressing a number of key areas related to homes, households and housing, the economy and society. Suitable questions include, but are not restricted to… • How do households and families share, transfer and exchange welfare and wealth through means of their homes and housing property? • How much do the experiences and welfare outcomes of housing wealth vary from country to country, or from city to city? • How have the welfare and housing outcomes for different social groups affected by changes in homeownership and property wealth? • What are the urban and spatial dimensions of transformations in housing equity and family welfare exchange? • How are relationships between housing, housing careers and the life-course changing? • How have housing markets, policies and regimes, and in particular the tenure of homeownership, changed in the past decades? • What are the specific economic and political implications of an increasing centrality of housing wealth in social inequalities?
How do I submit an abstract? Abstracts can be submitted via email to the following email address before midnight (Amsterdam), January 28th, 2016: [email protected]
Participants will be informed of acceptance of their abstract (or not) by early February. The website will be open for conference registration from January 4th until early May, 2016
Conference organisers: Caroline Dewilde, Christa Hubers, Christian Lennartz, Richard Ronald.
