BBC censors “Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is Dead”
Critics of the late pro-war neoliberal Margaret Thatcher have pushed the song “Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead” from the ”Wizard of Oz” right up the British charts to No. 1 on British iTunes and into the top five of the music chart used by the BBC to compile its weekly radio countdown of pop hits. The BBC has responded by only playing a bit of the song together with a craven explanation.
BBC director-general Tony Hall: “[the campaign is] distasteful and inappropriate… We have agreed that we won’t be playing the song in full, rather treating it as a news story and playing a short extract to put it in context.” [1].
