Women Faculty meet Women Students and Postdocs
On Wednesday, April 10th 2019, the women faculty of the Physics Department have invited the women students and postdocs for a lunch to discuss any issue or curiosity about being a woman in physics. This was also an occasion to celebrate Vidushi Adlakha, one of our graduate students who received the UH Teaching Excellence Award. Here is a picture of the event and of Vidushi with her award:
2019 L'Oreal USA For Women in Science Program Applications
The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program honors female scientists at a critical stage in their careers with grants of $60,000 each. Since 2003, they have awarded 75 postdoctoral women scientists nearly $4 million in grants. They are seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM. All infos can be found here:

Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP)
APS Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) are three-day regional conferences for undergraduate physics majors. The 2019 conferences will be held Friday, January 18 through Sunday afternoon, January 20, 2019. The deadline for abstract submission is October 12th, 2018. You can find all infos here:

2018 Nobel Prize in Physics
The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded this morning to three researchers for advances in laser physics. Among them, Donna Strickland is the third woman to ever receive this recognition, and the first one since 1963. Congratulations!
Renate W. Chasman Scholarship
The Chasman Award consists of a one-time $1,000 award, to be applied for by November 30th of each year to be presented in Spring of the competition year. Applicants must be:
- women, and
- graduate students at an accredited educational institution,
- performing research at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics),
- receiving their degree not prior to May of the competition year

Physics undergraduate student received the best poster award at the Second Annual UH-MRS Chapter Poster Presentation
Debora Mroczek, an undergraduate student from our Physics Department, presented a poster at the Second Annual UH-MRS Chapter Poster Presentation on Thursday, September 13th 2018. Her poster described her summer research activity in the group of Prof. Eric Bittner and received the Best Undergraduate Poster Award. Below is a picture of Debora in front of her poster. UH graduate student received the best poster award at the National Nuclear Physics Summer School 2018
Jamie Stafford, a graduate student from our Physics Department, recently attended the 2018 National Nuclear Physics Summer School at Yale University, where she presented a poster on "Freeze-out parameters from net-kaon fluctuations at RHIC" about the research project that she is conducting in the Nuclear Theory Group at UH. Her presentation was selected as best poster out of more than 40 participants. Here is a picture of Jamie at the school, in front of her poster:
UH physics graduate student receives fellowship from AAUW
Vidushi Adlakha, graduate student in the group of Prof. Kevin Bessler, recently received an International Fellowship from the American Association of University Women. She has been working on characterization of various random processes and applying them to climate and finance models. She hopes to apply her research to analyze and optimize microfinance models employed in developing countries for the uplifting of women. Her goal is to obtain tenure at a research university. Congratulations Vidushi!

Internship of Dulles high school student in the Nuclear Theory group
Jaanita Mehrani, a senior student at the Math and Science Academy at Dulles High School, has completed an internship in the Nuclear Theory Group at the UH Physics Department, during which she learned how to visualize scientific data through the software Paraview. Her work has led to a visualization of the topological charge calculated in lattice QCD configurations. Professional Skills Development Workshop for Women
Are you attending the APS April Meeting 2018 in Columbus or located in the Columbus area? Attend a free Professional Skills Development Workshop for Women on Friday, April 13 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The workshop will have two sessions running concurrently, led by Yvette Huet and Nancy Houfek, and is designed to develop skills in the areas of:
- Persuasive Communication
- Negotiation
- Leadership

The first Youth Career Fair for K-12 students will take place on Saturday, February 3rd 2018 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the TMCx Accelerator, 2450 Holcombe Blvd., Houston. This is an event where students have the opportunity to learn about and network with STEM professionals and entrepreneurs, STEM companies and Start-ups, and After-School Programs and STEM Competitions, with particular emphasis on minorities and diversities. Visits to Girls Inc Summer Camps
In summers 2015, 2016, and 2017, Prof. Lisa Koerner visited Girls Inc summer camps for girls and did hands-on physics demonstrations. Camp Smart is for girls ages 12-15, and Camp BitSmart is for girls ages 7-11. Undergraduates Samina Huq, Fre'Etta Brooks, Sarah Basyouni, and Jaelyn Kelly participated, as well as graduate student Casandra Morris and Physics lab supervisor Sladjana Maric. Visit to Girls Inc Spring Break Camp
On March 16th 2015 Prof. Claudia Ratti, a group of physics students and Physics lab supervisor Sladjana Maric visited a spring break camp for girls ages 7-11 and involved them in several STEM activities. Below are some pictures of the event.

Oct 22nd, 2009: American Physical Society Women Council visited the Department of Physics and engaged in the conversation of "Gender Equity" with faculty members, staffs, and students at the UH.
Nov 4th, 2009: Prof. Margaret Cheung reached out to 64 girls in the 4th and 5th grade at the DeChaumes Elementary School and demonstrated physics power through every day science experiments. Dr. Cheung built a battery out of potatoes, copper and zinc strips and powered an LED bulb!
